Yet despite the opportunity to make an appearance in Avengers: Endgame, Crossbones actor Frank Grillo turned down an offer to appear in the film. Crossbones, who was killed by Wanda Maximoff at the start of Captain America: Civil War, originally appeared as a friendly face for Captain America before revealing he was secretly a Hydra agent. Grillo recently revealed in an interview with Empire in a recent print version of the magazine’s hat, he refused to let the character appear in Avengers: Endgame, but had a good reason to do so. Check out his quote below:

There must have been many more Crossbones. I was the only character that I think should be in more of them, and those other silly characters are still there. I was a jerk, a little irritable. [My son] said, “It’s going to be the greatest movie in the world,” and he was right. And had a great time. They celebrated the tenth anniversary, Stan Lee was there, and I got up and left. “What a jerk I am!”

Could Crossbones be returning to the MCU via the Multiverse?

Although Marvel’s Multiverse has confusing rules, this could be the perfect excuse for a villain like Crossbones to return afterward. Avengers: Endgame. Since Grillo regrets his refusal to reprise the role, he could always play a variation of Crossbones and take on the new Captain America, Sam Wilson. With Captain America: New World Order Slated to hit theaters in early 2024, Marvel may drag Wilson and fellow hero Bucky Barnes into The Multiverse Saga by having them encounter a seemingly resurrected Crossbones, who is secretly a Multiversal variant with a bone to choose from. Since Marvel Comics often returns characters from the dead, Crossbones could be the first in a long line of Marvel returnees.

Where Crossbones Ranks Among Avengers Villains

Although Crossbones was never the most powerful villain, he was always a threat, thanks to his connection to Hydra. With Marvel suffering from a copycat villain problem even before Avengers: Endgame, most of the villains in the franchise tend to be mirror images of the heroes, which can make the final fights tedious. Crossbones turned out to be a different type of villain, as he never had superpowers like his adversaries Captain America and the Scarlet Witch. Instead, he was a villain who posed a systemic threat as a cog in the Hydra machine, proving that anyone the heroes trusted could turn out to be a monster.

Still, Crossbones can’t compare to villains like the charismatic Thanos in Avengers: Endgame or the irresistible Kang in Loki. While he may be more interesting than Whiplash, Aldrich Killian, or Cursed Malekith, he barely ranks in the top half of MCU villains for many due to the aforementioned villain issue. It also helped Crossbones fit the story he appeared in. While Gorr was not the Thor: Love and Thunder The villain the movie needed, because he didn’t capitalize on the movie’s strengths, Crossbones is perfect for high morale Captain America. This is why Crossbones is so memorable, and why it could have been perfect in Avengers: Endgame.
