Hollywood star Ryan Gosling is rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play a role in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie reboot.
Ryan Gosling is rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a role in the The Fantastic Four film. Phase five is set to begin next month with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will continue the ongoing multiverse saga. While several ongoing franchises are getting sequels, the MCU is set to reboot Marvel’s First Family, as the Fantastic Four are on the way. After being with Fox for nearly two decades, Marvel Studios finally got the The Fantastic Four rights when Disney acquired 20th Century Studios. While the MCU saw Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it was a variant of Mister Fantastic and not the Earth-616 iteration. In stage 6, The Fantastic Four will be part of the slate as they prepare for the major avengers upcoming movies.
Even if the The Fantastic Four the reboot isn’t starting production anytime soon, there’s been ongoing speculation about who will star as the iconic heroes. The cast announcement was originally expected to happen on D23 in 2022, as the film properly got its new creative team. However, it looks like a huge Hollywood star is heading to the MCU. During the last episode of The Hot Mic PodcastJeff Sneider mentioned that he had heard rumors that Gosling could play a role in The Fantastic Four. As of this story’s publication, Marvel Studios or anyone from Gosling’s team has commented on the rumors.
“Then there’s the rumor that Ryan Gosling is playing Sentry in the MCU. People tell me he’s like some kind of Superman from [character]. I haven’t heard of anything like that, of course. I had heard things about Gosling Fantastic Four…”
Everything we know about the MCU’s Fantastic Four
Similar to most MCU movies, Marvel Studios has kept details about the The Fantastic Four to restart. The film was originally to be directed by Spider Man director Jon Watts before leaving the project. by WandaVision Matt Shakman was officially tapped in 2022 to bring the Fantastic Four to life. Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer were later tapped by Marvel Studios as writers for The Fantastic Four.
Kevin Feige, who is the reboot’s executive producer, said that while it will be a new take on the heroes, it won’t be an origin story. Considering Fox attempted to retell the origin story in 2015, it makes sense that Marvel Studios would want to avoid it for MCU iterations. That means wherever Reed, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm are, they’ve probably been a team for quite some time. Whether or not they’ve been operating as the Fantastic Four for several years or if they’re at the start of their journey remains to be seen. Even though he got his cameo, John Krasinski shouldn’t play Earth-616’s Reed.
Would Ryan Gosling have a place in the MCU?
Gosling has been consistently elevated in fan castings for various roles in the MCU over the past few years. Given his star power, it’s up for debate whether he’d be better suited as Mister Fantastic, Human Torch, or even The Thing. Since The Fantastic Four will be an important part of the MCU going forward, it would make sense for Marvel Studios to bring in major names for these iconic characters. Although at the same time they can do a type of hybrid casting where they cast strangers for two of the heroes while the other two are represented by A-list names. Gosling, who was even imagined as the Ghost Rider of the MCU, would be a major asset to the MCU if he joined the The Fantastic Four film.
