Grizzlies vs Jazz Picks and Predictions: Markkanen Continues Explosive Play

Grizzlies vs Jazz NBA odds, tips and predictions tonight

The surprise Utah Jazz just clinched a road win in Memphis and are looking to win the Grizzlies back-to-back. While Ja Morant’s return calls that into question, Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen is proving to be a top option for the rebuilding squad.

The Utah Jazz wasted no time in establishing themselves as the biggest upset of the preseason NBA slate — and they’ll be looking to maintain their quick start tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Written off after going into rebuild mode this summer, the Jazz are 5-2 and have already pulled off a string of upsets, including victories over the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Pelicans and… those same Grizzlies.

Memphis (4-2) will be out for revenge here after an agonizing 124-123 loss to the Jazz on Saturday. The Grizzlies were without Starman Ja Morant (ill) that night, but Desmond Bane continued his red-hot shooting en route to 32 points and Dillon Brooks contributed 30 points.

Grizzlies vs Jazz best odds

Grizzlies vs Jazz tips and predictions

When Utah hit the reset button in the offseason by trading Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, all the talk focused on their massive stash of draft picks. But those deals also brought some proven NBA talent to Jazz – and Lauri Markkanen is Exhibit A.

Markkanen, who restarted his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers last year, has taken on a bigger role in Utah, averaging 21 points and nine rebounds. He led Saturday’s Jazz with 23 points and is shooting with confidence.

It’s a similar story for Collin Sexton, Kelly Olynyk and Jarred Vanderbilt, with new head coach Will Hardy making the most of a revamped roster. But Markkanen, who is still only 25 years old, excels as a goalscorer in this clash in particular.

Without Jaren Jackson Jr., the Grizzlies lack the kind of athletic big man who can live with the Finn as he steps over the arch or off the screens. While the Memphis guards (Ja Morant in particular) could be chasing Markkanen on the other end, he’s set for another productive night.

With Gobert no longer in the roster, there are now plenty of rebounds up for grabs as well. Utah often uses lineups without a traditional center, leaving Markkanen and others to do the dirty work on the glass.

I like seeing Markkanen filling the stat sheet here and cementing himself as Jazz’s top scoring option.

my best bet: Lauri Markkanen Over 28.5 points + rebounds (-110)

Grizzlies vs. Jazz Spread Analysis

The Jazz, whose bright start is no accident, may be offended by this spread, but it simply reflects the higher ceiling of the crowd, with Morant potentially returning after sitting out Saturday.

Utah should have Mike Conley (rest) back in the lineup tonight, with his steady hand balancing the heat-check shot from Sexton and Jordan Clarkson. However, Morant’s return would change everything for Memphis. In his absence, these teams seemed evenly matched, but Morant’s relentlessness in attacking the rim and his speed in transition put the Grizzlies in top form.

On the other end, some defensive slip was expected for Memphis without Jackson — but not by much. The Grizzlies ranked 12th in points allowed per game last season. In six games, they’re giving up 121 points a night, the fourth-worst mark in the NBA. Taylor Jenkins will certainly be expecting more from Santi Aldama and Brandon Clarke after watching Markkanen and Olynyk dominate the frontcourt over the weekend – and it’s reasonable to expect a better collective defensive effort tonight.

Winning both legs of this two-game miniseries is a tall order, so look for a resilient Grizzlies team to react and cover that small stretch on the road tonight.

Grizzlies vs Jazz Over/Under Analysis

We should pull off another high-scoring shootout tonight to match Saturday’s offensive fireworks, where both teams shot over 50% from the field. Both are undeterred by a quick game, and the Grizzlies lead the NBA in points per game.

Also, expect a barrage of 3-pointers. Utah (third) and Memphis (ninth) are both in the top 10 in 3-point attempts per game. Only Steph Curry is making more 3-pointers per game than Desmond Bane, and no one could ever fault Clarkson, Sexton or Dillon Brooks for being shy when it comes to lifting shots.

After the roster reshuffle, the Jazz are fearless – and with nothing to lose, this becomes an unexpectedly powerful attack. Even with a high line for the total, the over (which has scored in 16 of the Utah teams’ last 21 meetings) is a good stat.
