With many teams approaching the 10-game mark of the season, there have been many ups and downs across the federation. Tonight, the Philadelphia 76ers take on the New York Knicks as both teams are unlikely to be happy with the current standings.

New York hasn’t squeezed top production out of its big-money players, and Philadelphia is struggling to stay afloat without future Hall of Fame inductee James Harden.

This divisional matchup should be quite competitive and with Harden out and Joel Embiid questionable we could look forward to a nice fight between Tyrese Maxey and RJ Barrett.

It wasn’t the best start to the season for either team. After a hot start, the Knicks don’t seem to have any reliable options at night. The 76ers had similar problems in their early days, which only gets more worrisome with Harden’s injury. While he’s not particularly good at shooting the ball, RJ Barrett remains such a safe choice that the Knicks have to offer at this point.

The problem with Barrett, aside from his 3-point percentage (23%) who will improve, is that in many ways he seems to have reached his ceiling. There’s nothing to suggest he’s getting any better, but that doesn’t matter in tonight’s game, where he faces a 76ers defense giving up 23.47 points a game to opposing small forwards.

For the most part, Barrett’s O/U for points is around 19.5, and he’s covered that in three of the first seven games of the season. Doubtful for tonight, Embiid poses a major mystery as to how this game will be played. Barrett could blow his O/U number if the big man isn’t available to protect the paint. Historically, the 76ers’ defensive rating is three points better when Embiid is on the court.

Another factor to consider is the availability of Matisse Thybulle. Thybulle, who often takes on the task of guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter weapon, could potentially cause problems for Philadelphia in his efforts to contain Barrett when he may or may not be 100% out.

In four games last season against the 76ers, Barrett had two 20-point games, including a 30-point game last March. These teams know each other well, and with Philly struggling with multiple injuries, Barrett should be able to have a good outing tonight.

At first glance, one might wonder why the 76ers are only a 3-point favorite over the Knicks. With Harden out for a month and Joel Embiid questionable about returning from a non-covid illness, Philadelphia is vulnerable to an early-season slip that could land it in a tough matchup against New York.

After coming out of the gates and scoring lots of points, the Knicks have cooled off significantly as the talent they faced has increased. With or without Embiid, they still can’t match the 76’s on talent alone and that should show again tonight.

New York is a team that basically makes no sense and does without a real franchise player. The Knicks are the only team in the NBA without a 20-point-per-game scorer this season. You wonder night after night if Julius Randle, who has just nine more field goals than Obi Toppin this season (while playing 105 more minutes), can get hot.

Philly knows his identity whether Embiid, Harden or anyone else is missing a game. That level of continuity and chemistry allowed them to play nearly 500 basketball (10-11) last season when Embiid was unavailable. I like Philly against the spread here.

After what seemed almost like a daydream to score last season, the Knicks are finally getting back to reality. After averaging 123.5 points in the first four games, they averaged 105 points in the last three games. Wednesday’s disappointing 112-99 loss to the Atlanta Hawks was the first game they’ve scored under 100 points this season.

It’s hard to predict what the 76ers will look like without Harden in the lineup. As a point guard for their offense, he did a great job, leading the team in field goal and by 3 percentage points for the first time. Those numbers can’t be sustainable if someone as good as Harden isn’t in the lineup.

The Knicks appear to be in some early-season funk. They rank in the bottom half of the league for offense, field goal percentage, and 3-point percentage. New York has invested heavily in Julius Randle, and he’s shooting a disappointing 42% off the floor. The Knicks don’t have the firepower to score big every night. I like the under here.
