Keanu Reeves and Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry randomly blasts Keanu Reeves in heartless comments

Matthew Perry slams fellow actor Keanu Reeves in his new memoir, Friends, lovers and the great terrible thing, apparently for no reason. Perry is best known for his role as Chandler Bing in Friendsbut the comedian has also established himself as a film actor in other roles such as 17 again and The whole nine yards. However, Perry’s career was frequently affected by his drug addiction, which he discussed at length in his memoir.

Because of those memoirs, Perry has been in the news a lot in recent weeks. Major snippets have made their way online as he reveals intimate details about his life, career and struggles with addiction in Friends, lovers and the terrible big thing. The actor admits he nearly died from opioid overuse and spent over $9 million trying to achieve sobriety. Perry also opens up about his love life, including stories about how he broke up with Julia Roberts, his crush on Jennifer Aniston, and his awkward date with Cameron Diaz.

In new excerpts from his memoirs published via Variety, Perry discusses the tragic deaths of prominent Hollywood actors and comedians, including River Phoenix, Chris Farley and Heath Ledger. While mourning the loss of his friends, Perry also repeatedly slams Keanu Reeves at different times, insinuating that the actor shouldn’t be alive. Perry doesn’t elaborate on why (or if) he doesn’t like the actor. It should also be noted that Reeves considered River Phoenix a close friend of his and praised the late actor on several occasions. Read what Perry wrote below.

“River was a magnificent man, inside and out – too handsome for this world, it turned out. It always seems like it’s the real talented guys who come down. Why do original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us? River was a better actor than me. I was funnier.

“His [Farley’s] the disease had progressed faster than mine. (Plus, I had a healthy fear of the word “heroine,” a fear we didn’t share.) I punched a hole in the wall of Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room when I found her. Keanu Reeves walks among us. I had to promote ‘Almost Heroes’ two weeks after he died. I found myself discussing publicly his death from drugs and alcohol. I was stoned the whole time.”

For several years now, Reeves has been enjoying a major career renaissance spurred by a lot of affection online. Reeves has become a household name for his roles in the John Wick and Matrix franchises, but the actor is loved beyond his acting. Reeves is considered one of Hollywood’s finest stars and lives up to his reputation in all of his public appearances and when meeting fans. There have been countless stories online about his generosity, and in a time when more public figures are being called out for problematic behavior, Reeves’ good nature has made him incredibly popular. Additionally, over the past few years, Reeves has gained notoriety beyond his acting role via several internet memes regarding his likability and attractiveness.

Although Reeves has yet to publicly respond to Perry’s comments, they seem to come out of nowhere. Reeves and Perry have never crossed paths onscreen in any significant way, but it seems unlikely that these comments were meant to poke fun at the actor given the context of the quotes. There is already a lot of pushback against Perry, and it remains to be seen what will become of that situation. Whatever the reason, these comments only reflect badly Pearnot Reeves.
