The film offers a raw and intimate look at Selena’s life between the years 2016 and 2022, including her physical and mental health struggles with lupus, depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder.
However, something fans have also taken notice of is the doc’s portrayal of Raquelle Stevens, one of Selena’s longtime best friends.
There are a few scenes that stand out, like when Selena feels nervous before her speech at McLean Psychiatric Hospital’s annual dinner – where she’ll share her mental health struggles and possibly her bipolar diagnosis for the first time – and Raquel enters the room, barely acknowledging its existence.
Or when Selena and Raquelle are on a philanthropic trip to Kenya, and Raquelle is quick to remind him that despite the incredible times she’s having, that’s not “reality.”
Or when Selena is doing press in London after Kenya, and Raquelle implies that Selena is complaining because she doesn’t want to go to a birthday dinner the night they fly back to Los Angeles.
People on Twitter absolutely took note and was quick to point out that Raquelle might not be giving Selena the support she needed:
Watching Selena Gomez Documentary and She Really Needs to Ditch That ‘Friend’ Raquelle
Something about that girl Raquelle in the new Selena Gomez documentary is giving me bad vibes. ESPECIALLY when she walked into the room and didn’t recognize Selena until Selena recognized her first.
Raquelle really plays with the cameras in this documentary. The concerns she expresses are very unfair. She tries to seem like she’s super caring, but she pushes Selena’s boundaries and gives her absolutely no real support. It’s sad to see. #MyMindAndMe
just because raquelle has been through it all with selena doesn’t mean she can be so toxic, dismissive, controlling and passive aggressive towards selena #MyMindAndMe
This whole scene with Raquelle was crazy. I have heart disease and for me, doing just ONE outing can be physically exhausting. Selena has a health problem, severe jet lag and wants to take care of her body and somehow it’s UNGRATEFUL? #MyMindAndMe #SelenaGomez
However, others have defended and even praised Raquelle for her treatment of Selena in the documentary:
Watching the @selenagomez documentary, and frankly Raquelle Stevens is such a deep, emotionally intelligent person. She really guided Selena through very difficult times. #MyMindAndMe

I’m sorry for the rant, but as the best friend of someone with mental illness, for whom I also can’t be emotionally available 24/7 and tell them the hard truth when this is necessary, it angers me the way people paint Raquelle to be a bad friend #MyMindAndMe
In 2019, Selena and Raquelle went public about their friendship on an episode of Raquelle’s Giving back to the generation podcast. In the episode, Selena said: “When we decided to do this, it was because I want there to be more friendships like this. … I hope what we get out of it as well , is that we just want – I want to be an example of friendship and what it can look like, and the importance.”
And Raquelle later added, “I want to see more friendships like this. I want to see people embrace qualities like forgiveness and vulnerability and authenticity. I just think that’s so important.”
