It was mismatched couples week days of our lives, but mostly it felt like we were just getting a lot of B plots clumped into one group. The problem is that some of these stories should be in the spotlight, but they just don’t feel like it.
Why did I feel like nothing happened this week? Maybe part of the problem is that the November sweeps are fast approaching and the show is on hold until then. Or maybe the days of our lives dragged on some of these stories too long and we lost some pizzazz.
Take Eric and Nicole. They have come full circle with her modeling for him, which is how they fell in love with each other a few decades ago. The passions are inflamed, etc., etc. But rather than feeling like a steady buildup of forbidden love, their dance just felt dragged and frustrating. When Eric first came back, I was excited to see this play out, but I’m not even really supporting them anymore.
Nicole, divorce already from Rafe. You’re just being cruel at this point. It’s not even about being torn between two men. Or if so, Days doesn’t do a decent job of showing it. She wants Eric rather than Rafe. Period.
So close, but so far
I really thought we were going to have an exciting twist when Gabi tracked down Rolf and forced the truth on him with a scalpel to his throat. Ah ha, I thought. I didn’t see it coming, but now Gabi can play cat and mouse with Li as they plan their wedding, then destroy it at the altar!
But then everything was literally erased with Rolf’s magic anti-memory serum and the momentum of the story lazily slipped back down to almost non-existent.
It’s Gabi’s wistful gaze as she realizes this as close to the cat and mouse as we are becoming.

After: Day of Days is back and in person!
It really hit home as Li tried to do some damage control with a Dr. Rolf who was no longer in Salem. “Why in God’s name did you have to erase his memory?” “I don’t know, Li, maybe the most important question is: why in God’s name are you calling Rolf when Gabi is home with you?” I’m sorry, but she’s too smart to keep buying all of Li’s lame excuses every time she catches him carelessly plotting. It doesn’t create tension, just annoyance.
And I know we’re supposed to support Brady/Chloe and Stefan/Gabi…but Stefan and Chloe are actually cute. And his comment that with her he feels like more than just a power-hungry corporate machine with her was kind. Still, the sparks keep flying between him and Gabi, so maybe I’ll be more excited about them. Or they’ll just hang around like the rest of lukewarm relationships…
As for Brady, yes, Chloe, Kristen moving in before you’re done moving is, indeed, “so absurd.” Everything about it is. I don’t know what to say other than Brady isn’t the brightest. Obviously, he needs help. Gabi could have been a really fun ally to take down Kristen if she had kept her memories… but no, that story opportunity also flew away.
So why wouldn’t he tell his loved ones what’s really going on? Is he afraid they can’t keep a secret? Her father is a former spy and her stepmother is a master of the human mind – they can help.
Too little, too late?
Are we going to reset Alex/Stephanie a bit? Well, maybe not so much a reset as an evolution to where they should began. His breaking in to find Alex handcuffed to Sloane’s bed was a ridiculous prank…but it’s a prank I could get myself behind. I was actually a little appalled to find myself on Alex’s team in this one. Stephanie was terribly critical, demanding to know what Alex was doing there as she broke in. She was hijacking, okay, but that’s still none of her business.
See? Alex is shocked, I agree with him too.

But then they got into verbal fights, and this That’s how I really wish they had started their relationship. Starting from a place of mutual disgust is an age-old romantic trope, and the sparks flying between insults can be downright electric. Alex could have been the arrogant playboy that Stephanie shot down, leading the two to clash as they worked together.
But days of our lives started from a place of harassment and discomfort, and it’s harder to move on to the next phase from there. At least for me. But now Stephanie needs Alex’s help with Sloane, so let’s hope the show manages to set up the relationship it’s setting up one way or another.
Twin talk
With so much focus on Stephanie’s attempts to get the dirt on Sloane, the whole devastating Chanel secret felt like it was missing one important piece: Chanel! In fact, the whole week did, other than she couldn’t tell Allie what was going on and a few awkward moments scattered about…like the news of the trio spreading through the family members of participants.
And that excuse Allie made to Chanel to get together with Alex again? “The sooner we start hanging out again, the less awkward it will be?” You weren’t hanging around before! It’s not like he’s your best friend. You’ve bumped into each other a few times and you’ve gone out drinking once.
“But I thought it was meant to be my story! Why am I barely in it, Horton??

After: The reunion we never saw coming
On the plus side, as bizarre as her time with Chanel and Allie was, I’m liking Wendy more and more. She was wonderfully incredulous as Johnny explained all the twins with estranged fathers/ex-wives with a sister/devil-ruined marriage/in Tripp’s mother thing. Because everything is completely crazy. But then she would also sympathize with Johnny’s pain…and kindly put him in his place at Allie and Chanel. He needs more of that in his bratty moments.
In the past, we’ve seen these two together as they plot against their respective family members, but the duo have spoken enough about Tripp this week to make it clear they’re headed straight for a triangle. . Although I still feel like they made a mistake by removing Joey from the equation.
wandering thoughts
• Ava’s plot against EJ should to be a beacon of hope… but we had a few words to say about that elsewhere.
• You know how we know the holiday season is on? They took the children out. We have Rachel, Holly and even a new Ari.
“And who are you dressing up as for Halloween?” A kid with a key?

• Forget what would have happened if Alex had to use the bathroom while Sloan was gone. nobody saw Gerald’s game? What if something happened and she never came back??
• Stephanie’s constant reassurances to Paulina are ridiculous. “I just keep digging myself deeper.” Yes, you do. Promising what you can’t deliver isn’t just stupid, it’s unprofessional!
• I feel like John figured out what was going on with Brady on one line was a bit of a logical leap, even though it was the right one. “Eureka! Not only is Kristen responsible for the serum, but we’ll need more, which we didn’t know before!
