Sean O’Malley is the UFC’s No. 1 bantamweight title.
That’s according to the “official” UFC ranking update, which sees “Sugar” ousting former champion Petr Yan from the top spot after claiming a controversial split-decision win at the UFC 280 pay-per in Abu Dhabi last weekend -View-Event (PPV) scored .
Remember, it’s not his (expletive) fault.
The drama doesn’t stop there as newly crowned lightweight champion Islam Makhachev blasted his way up the pound-for-pound chart – at the expense of ex-champion Charles Oliveira – by dropping “Do Bronx” in the UFC 280 left and submitted headliners.
Respect “the truth”.
Here is how UFC creates its official ranking:
The rankings were created by a voting panel made up of media representatives. Media representatives were asked to vote for what they believed to be the best fighters in the UFC by weight class and pound for pound. A fighter can only be selected if they have active status in the UFC. A fighter can appear in more than one weight class at the same time. The Champion and Interim Champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and are therefore not eligible for voting by weight class. However, the champions can be chosen for the pound-for-pound ranking.
Take a look at what the latest ranking field looks like, courtesy of UFC.com. Note: (+/- = movement in the rankings, T = tie, *NR = not previously in the rankings).
