The blockbuster is back! At least in the fictional world, like Canadian actor Madeleine Arthur (Devil in Ohio, to all the boys I’ve loved before) joins Randall Park, Melissa Fumero and JB Smoove in a new Netflix comedy, aptly titled blockbusterabout backing up the latest Blockbuster Video store.
Park plays Timmy, a dedicated movie buff whose first and only job was working at his local Blockbuster store, and is now the manager. Timmy gets a call from the company saying he’s now running the newest Blockbuster store, which doesn’t bode well for the future of his job and the rest of his team.
“Humans need to interact with each other,” Timmy proclaims, comparing Blockbuster to everyone else dropping by to watch movies on a streaming service, (you guessed it) Netflix.
While Timmy loves Blockbuster, not all of his employees do. Eliza (Melissa Fumero), a mother who recently found out her husband cheated on her, is pretty salty to be back at her high school job after going to Harvard for a brief time, but she’s still a crush. Timmy’s longtime.
There’s also “Blockbuster Mom” Connie (Olga Merediz), aspiring director Carlos (Olga Merediz), high schooler Hannah (Madeleine Arthur) and Kayla (Kamaia Fairburn) whose father Percy (JB Smoove) owns the mall where is the Blockbuster store. .
The rest of the series revolves around Timmy trying to save his Blockbuster from its grim future, while each episode also tackles more specific comedic drama with some of the store’s employees, ranging from Carlos upset over the death of the local film critic, to Connie and Kayla thinking that Hannah’s mother may have been the victim of a local serial killer.
“I grew up going to Blockbuster, … I have really special memories of wandering the aisles of the store,” Arthur said. Yahoo Canada about going back to a store for the show.
“I love comedy, I was really excited to work with Randall and Melissa and JB, and the rest of the amazing cast, and the writing is so funny. After reading the first script, it’s so full of heart , created by Vanessa Ramos, and it was just kind of silly.

Hannah is an interesting character on the show. She’s naive and says things like, she wanted to be a vet but the “language barrier” was too difficult, but we also learn that she’s smart with her personal finances.
“I love playing Hannah, she’s very quirky, she has a really unique sense of humor that was really fun to dive into and develop,” Arthur said.
“She’s definitely optimistic…She’s very cheerful. She’s always well-meaning, but sometimes she misses the point a little bit and she loves her co-workers, they’re like family, and she really wants to see Timmy succeed and keep Blockbuster afloat.

The Canadian Home of the Last Blockbuster
So where did Netflix recreate a Blockbuster store in 2022? Right here in Canada, in British Columbia, in the Vancouver area.
Madeleine Arthur, originally from British Columbia but now living in Los Angeles, took the opportunity to show him blockbuster shares the spotlight with some of his favorite spots.
“It’s always nice to come home and see my friends and family and then have a cast,” Arthur said. “Some people have been to Vancouver, some haven’t, and I was able to show them the city and take them to some of my favorite restaurants,…and I took them snowshoeing and went to the suspension bridge from Capilano, Tyler and I also went to Whistler for the weekend.
“I tried to show them beautiful British Columbia and what Vancouver has to offer.”

So far in his career, Arthur has been able to take on and develop very different personas.
“That’s what I love about being an actor and that’s what excites me, playing a character like Mae in Devil in Ohiowhere she’s dealing with so much trauma, and it’s very mysterious and enigmatic, and then playing Hannah, which is also full of emotions that just come out in a different way,” Arthur said.
“They are totally so different. They tell very different stories and for me that’s what I hope to continue to do, tell a wide variety of stories and play a whole bunch of different characters.
In the future, Arthur would like to do something a little different, a project in French.
“I would love to do a French film, I’m going to keep saying that until it happens,” Arthur said. “I would love to do an action movie, I recently took up boxing and was a gymnast growing up, and I feel like some sort of spy thriller or any action would really be fun.”
“Then I’ll say, like a period piece in the 1600s and also, let’s do the 1920s. Basically, I’d like to do everything because I’m young and I have the time, and I hope that’s just the beginning.
