Ottawa Senators

Goaltender Cam Talbot will start the season for the first time on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 35-year-old Talbot missed the first three weeks of the season with a rib injury and makes his Sens debut as a substitute for Anton Forsberg on Thursday.

Head Coach DJ Smith on Sens’ goalkeeping plan:

“The goal all along was to be balanced and whoever played better would get more games. Unfortunately for Forsy, he had to play almost all of them. Talbot is fresh, I expect he’ll come in and do what he needs to do and we’ll ride him for a bit.”

Last season with the Minnesota Wild, Talbot compiled a 32-12-4 record with a 2.76 clean sheet average and a .911 save percentage. He was acquired by the Wild in the off-season in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.

The senators have recalled defense attorney Jacob Bernard-Docker from the AHL’s Belleville Senators, the team announced Friday.

The 22-year-old had made 13 appearances for Ottawa this season, recording one assist. The Canmore, Alta. The native was drafted 26th overall by the Sens in the 2018 NHL draft.

Smith also updated on the status of forward Josh Norris, who is out with a shoulder injury. No decision has yet been made on his recovery plan and Norris is currently seeking a second opinion on the injury.

“It’s his right to do and consider what’s best for him. It would be great to have him back but we have to carry on like he’s not coming,” Smith said.

The team also announced Friday that it has entered into a process to sell the NHL franchise.


Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled forward Wayne Simmonds from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, the team announced Friday. Simmonds was loaned to the Marlies on Tuesday

The 34-year-old has played three games with the Maple Leafs this season, recording one assist.

The club also announced that they have loaned out defender Filip Kral to the Marlies. The 23-year-old has played two games with the Leafs this season and hasn’t scored a point.

According to TSN’s Mark Masters, forwards Pontus Holmberg and Nick Robertson were spotted wearing gray Extras jumpers in Friday’s training session.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel stood in for Kral on the defensive in training.

Ahead of their upcoming duel, Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe announced that Ilya Samsonov will play the Boston Bruins at home on Saturday night and Erik Kallgren will play the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh on Sunday afternoon.

The 25-year-old Samsonov celebrated his fifth win of the season against the Philadelphia Flyers, where he conceded two goals in 25 shots. In seven starts, the Russian-born goaltender has a record of 5-2 with a 2.30 GAA and a .920 save ratio.

Kallgren, 26, has played three games this season, losing one in rule and two in overtime. He carries a GAA of 3.62 and a savings percentage of 0.875.


Winnipeg Jets

The Jets have placed forward Morgan Barron on injured reserve due to wrist surgery and placed forward Jansen Harkins on a regular recall, the team said on Friday.

Barron, 23, has played nine games this season, recording one goal and three assists. Barron is expected to be absent for four to five weeks after surgery to repair a small broken bone.


Columbus blue jackets

Blue Jackets head coach Brad Larsen announced that forward Boone Jenner (ill) is a game time call for tonight’s game against the Colorado Avalanche in Finland.

Jenner, 29, has one goal and three assists in 10 games this season. He has spent his entire career at Columbus since being selected by the club in the 7th round of the 2011 NHL Draft. his next game will be his 600th in the franchise.

The club later announced that defender Nick Blankenburg had been activated from injured reserve after missing the last three games with an upper-body injury. The 24-year-old has one goal and one assist in four games this season.

In a related move, the Jackets assigned defenseman Gavin Bayreuther to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters.


New York Rangers

Head coach Gerard Gallant says defender Ryan Lindgren has been dealing with an upper body injury on a daily basis and the team will learn more about the injury on Saturday.

Lindgren, 24, has two assists in 12 games with Rangers this season.
